Landau, Alice: Snippets from my Family Album

Landau, Alice: Snippets from my Family Album

by Alice Landau

Alice Landau and her brother Gyurka grew up in a hard-working, theatre-loving extended family on Csepel Island in the Danube River, just south of Budapest in Hungary. Both cultural and outdoor pursuits were central family interests; they enjoyed wonderful summer holidays in a rustic camp and skiing in winter. Alice’s incisive and colourful portraits of her many relatives bring them to life again, though most were murdered in the Holocaust.

Following a year in Rome, Alice migrated alone to Australia in 1947, where she reveled in new-found opportunities to hike in the mountains and to study in a number of educational courses. She established herself as a bridal designer of note and later, with her husband, became importers and retailers of fine chocolates. Her unswerving energy and delight in others, together with her vibrant narrative voice, make this a thoroughly enjoyable read, as well as a homage to those she lost so tragically.
