Schwartz, Schmul: Under Red Skies

Schwartz, Schmul: Under Red Skies

by Schmul Schwartz

In 1933, the author and his wife, both aged nineteen and Communist idealists, illegally crossed the border from Poland to ‘the workers’ paradise’. They were to spend twenty-six years in the Soviet Union. Of these, eleven years were in prison camp, three in exile and the remaining twelve ‘free’ but without the rights of Soviet citizens. They somehow found the strength to survive the disillusionment, terror and privation. With that strength, Schmul and his family rebuilt their lives in Melbourne. For years, Schmul was a noted actor on the Yiddish stage. A riveting personal and historical record.
