Zimmerman, Susan: Like Streams in the Negev

Zimmerman, Susan: Like Streams in the Negev

by Susan Sara Feiga Zimmerman

This memoir is the author’s lyrical recollection of childhood and teenage years surrounded by loving parents, relatives and friends. It is also a history of  pioneering ancestors, compiled from written sources and oral testimonies of living relatives.

It is a gentle and uplifting chronicle of the educational and social challenges of her Jewish youth interwoven with stories of family members, many of whom played significant roles in the development and growth of Jewish communities in Victoria and Western Australia.

As an adult Susan became an observant, Orthodox Jew and reflects back on her observant ancestors with admiration and pride. However, she attributes the path she chose to the challenges she faced while young, to one special Hebrew teacher and to the traditional Jewish values of her parents and the extended family involved in her life.

The book was conceived as a gift to her children. It has become an important contribution to Australian Jewish history from the mid-nineteenth century to post-World War II.
