Description

August 1941. After a horrific six-week journey, a bedraggled, starved group of Jewish men, women and children stumble from a cattle train into a desolate landscape near Novosibirsk, Siberia. They include nine-year-old Eva, her mother and grandmother, Viennese refugees from a privileged background who had fled to Latvia. When Germany invades Russia, they are designated ‘enemy aliens’ and are sent for six years to an infamous Gulag. Eva, from a long line of feisty women, survives with her humanity, creativity and humour to become a fair dinkum Aussie.
