Echoes from the past : the Rifka Norman story

Mandelbaum, Rae

The story of Rifka Norman and her journey, following her father out of Vilno ghetto and into the unknown.

It is September 1943. The SS rounds up the last three thousand able-bodied men in the Vilno Ghetto and loads them into railway cattle trucks – their destination, slave labour camps in Estonia. Fourteen-year-old Rifka Norman, having just lost her mother, cannot bear losing her father as well. She dons his clothes and cap, takes her seven-year-old brother, Chaim, by the hand and they join him on his journey into the unknown. A little gem of a book, by a modest heroine.
