Description
It is September 1943. The SS rounds up the last three thousand able-bodied men in the Vilno Ghetto and loads them into railway cattle trucks – their destination, slave labour camps in Estonia. Fourteen-year-old Rifka Norman, having just lost her mother, cannot bear losing her father as well. She dons his clothes and cap, takes her seven-year-old brother, Chaim, by the hand and they join him on his journey into the unknown. A little gem of a book, by a modest heroine.
